Jan2009/1 bulletin: About geeses and a happy & safe new year

Wishing residents Salaam Ma’al Hijrah, and a Happy & Safe New Year ahead

Another year passes. Many will make new resolutions, and some will soon break them. Still, we all wish and aspire for better things everytime we turn a new chapter. We aspire to have a happier and safer year ahead for Greenlaners. Let’s strengthen the community and teamwork. To this end, we’d like to share a story about geese. Many of you may have heard or read about it… but we still think it is a great story. So enjoy:

It is well known that geese fly in a ‘V’ formation when migrating from cold to warm climates. Science has learnt about why they fly that way: as each bird flap its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following it. By flying in ‘V’ formation, the whole flock can fly at least 70% farther than if each bird flew on its own.

When a goose falls out of formation, it feels the resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of flying with the flock.

When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies at the lead point. Geese share leadership and take turns doing hard jobs for the group so that no one gets too tired. The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Finally when a goose weakens or is wounded and falls out of formation, two geese fall out and follow the wounded goose down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it is either able to fly or until it is dead, and they then set out on their own or with another formation until they catch up with the group.

Once again, the committee appeals for security participation

All residents of Greenlane share a common goal of safety and security for our families. For two years we all helped make Greenlane a better place. Even so, security participation remains a major challenge. The committee appeals to all Greenlaners to participate in the security arrangement and increase collections. Do provide constructive feedback through the correct channels, and DO assist us improve the security service.

We believe that if we all co-operated towards this common direction, we can achieve our goals quicker and easier. Let’s also encourage, support and stick by one another even in tough times so we can all make Greenlane a safer and secure place for all.

So Salaam Ma’al Hijrah, and have a Happy & Safe New Year ahead. Gong Xi Fa Cai! May the new years bring more happiness to the community.
